Best-Made Plans: The Startling Reasons Why Checklists are Sensational

As single moms, our lives get chaotic. It’s the meals and the meal prep, the homework and the sports games, the laundry, and the cleaning. The list goes on and on. Everything needs tending to, and everyone needs, well; you. Amid the chaos, I have always found that systems and routines are the toolboxes that house the equipment necessary to build a rock-solid unit. Planning smarter means I need the undeniable capacity of that tailored reminder tool known as the checklist. Thus, checklists are the nails that hold my family unit (and sanity) together. Here are four interesting reasons why you need them too:

Reason #1: Checklists Help With Visualization

Previously in last week’s post, 7 Simple Tasks That Will Change Your Life Instantly, I talked about how visualization is essential to goal setting and success. You want to be able to see your outcome and the steps necessary to reach your desired goal.
If my goal is to have a clutter-free home, I should visualize how that looks. That could mean no dirty laundry, organized closets, stored kitchen items, etc.
I write those down, and now these items become to-dos on my Clutter-Free Home Checklist. It is that easy! And honestly, there are few things as satisfying as seeing those boxes getting checked off one by one๐Ÿ˜†.

Reason #2: They Help You See Priorities

Another reason checklists are awesome is that that they force you to prioritize. Prioritizing tasks can be challenging. With so much to do, it is easy to get intimidated. You might get so overwhelmed by all the responsibilities that you continue to put them off.
When I have a checklist in front of me, it is not hard to decide the tasks that need completing first. And most importantly, if some nonemergency comes up but is not on the checklist, I do not stress myself about getting to it until I finish my current list.

Reason #3 Checklists Give You Pleasure

When you use checklists, the number one person you are answering to is yourself. It provides proof of all the tasks you have been completing or not completing.
When you accomplish something, your brain releases the reward chemical we know as dopamine. Checklists trigger dopamine. So naturally, the more checks you make, the more pleasure you feel. The more pleasurable you are, the less stressed you are.

Reason #4 They Are Versatile & Easy

You can quite literally make a checklist for anything; school, work, home, etc. And there are various checklists that you can utilize.

They include (but are not limited to):

Also, you can make a checklist with anything; notebook paper, a spreadsheet, blackboard, dry erase board, templates, or an app. Whatever your preference, it is always simple because it is easy to access, and it serves its purpose.

So, that is all in a nutshell. Those are all of the surprising reasons you should use a checklist, friend!
